Van Jaarsveld Weaves His Magic

Van Jaarsveld - Star Of The Show.

Martin Van Jaarsveld struck his second century of the match to give Kent a memorable four-wicket LV County Championship victory over Surrey at the Oval.

Van Jaarsveld, who was dropped twice in his second innings, made 115 not out to go with 114no in the first and a career-best five for 33 as Kent bowled the hosts out for just 130 in the second innings.

The result leaves Surrey at the foot of the Division One table without a Championship win this season, and is one that they should have won after taking a 127-run lead into the second innings.

Kent resumed the day needing 92 runs to win on 166 for five, and the partnership of Van Jaarsveld and Geraint Jones took them to within 30 runs of victory before Jones was out for 39 edging a wide Jade Dernbach delivery to Ali Brown at first slip.

Yasir Arafat was dropped by Abdul Razzaq two overs later, with Van Jaarsveld hitting Dernbach for four to long on to pass his hundred two balls later.

And it was fitting that the former South Africa batsman hit the winning runs, as he flicked Saqlain Mushtaq past short leg for four to wrap up a remarkable victory for Kent.
