Mother Nature Wins At Edgbaston

Mother Nature Wins At Edgbaston

McCullum - left frustrated.

No result was declared in the second one-day international between England and New Zealand on a rain-hit day in Birmingham.

Just one further over was needed to be bowled for a positive result to be garnered, with the Kiwis chasing a Duckworth/Lewis target of 160 from 23 overs.

That target would have been revised to 135-2 from 20 overs for a result to stand but showers hit Edgbaston for the umpteenth time with 19 overs bowled, the Black Caps stranded on 127-2.

Brendon McCullum looked to be guiding the tourists to victory, ending on 60 not out, but New Zealand remain 1-0 down in the five-match series.

England had completed 24 overs having made 162 all out after the start had been delayed by more than four hours by persistent rain.

Luke Wright starred with 52 from 38 deliveries, including six fours and two sixes, while captain Paul Collingwood chipped in with 37 off 24 balls.

Initially a 29-over affair, the match was reduced to 24 and then 23 overs by further stoppages after Daniel Vettori won the toss and invited the hosts to bat.

Ian Bell faced just three Kyle Mills deliveries before Vettori caught him off a leading edge, and Michael Mason snared Kevin Pietersen (13) who also picked out Vettori at mid-off.

But Sussex all-rounder Wright transformed the innings in the 10th over, hoisting Mason for massive sixes over long-off and midwicket in an over which cost 20 runs.

He reached his 50 off only 33 balls but holed out to Scott Styris at long-off as he attacked Grant Elliott immediately before rain forced the players off with England 77 for three.

Ravi Bopara (10) was run out after playing Vettori to midwicket as a result of a mix-up with Collingwood, but the skipper put on 46 in five overs with Owais Shah (18) before Elliott removed both in successive overs.

A quickfire 23 from Dimitri Mascarenhas, who replaced stiff back victim Ryan Sidebottom, carried the final total to 162 as three wickets fell in the final over.

Elliott finished with three wickets for 23 runs from five overs with Mills and Tim Southee also claiming two wickets.

The Black Caps were left facing a revised target of 160 in 23 overs and McCullum and Ross Taylor steered them to 78 for one after only 10 overs.

Opener Jamie How had made 16 when he picked out Shah at short midwicket off Stuart Broad in the fourth over, with McCullum seeing little of the strike.

But the tourists gradually increased the tempo despite Collingwood ringing the changes and they reached 69 for one at the end of the three powerplays.

Taylor (25) eventually threw his wicket away when he guided a Collingwood full toss into the hands of Wright on the midwicket boundary, but the Kiwis remained on course.

McCullum and Scott Styris (19 not out) appeared to have things under control until rain intervened for the final, frustrating time.
