Ganguly Eyes ODI Recall

Ganguly Eyes ODI Recall

Ganguly - targeting ODI return.

Former captain Sourav Ganguly believes good performances in the Indian Premier League can help earn him a recall to his national one-day team.

The 35-year-old Bengal batsman was left out of the squad for the Commonwealth Bank Series in Australia, which India won after beating the hosts in the opening two encounters of the best-of-three finals.

Ganguly, who averages 41 in ODIs, now faces an uphill task with the selectors inclined to bring more young players into the fray after the success in the World Twenty20 and CB Series.

But Ganguly has a chance to impress the selectors in the IPL, where he will captain Kolkata's Knight Riders team.

"I will have to perform," he told the Asian Age newspaper.

"I don't know the reason why I was left out. Whatever the reason for me being left out... I am 35, and I'll get another opportunity somewhere."

Ganguly is likely to be part of the India squad for this month's three-Test series against South Africa but it is IPL's Twenty20 format that could showcase the left-hander's worth in limited-overs games.

The Knight Riders team includes the likes of Ricky Ponting, Chris Gayle, David Hussey, Brendon McCullum, Umar Gul and Shoaib Akhtar, meaning Ganguly will have some tricky decisions ahead with the rules allowing a maximum of four foreign players.

"Chris Gayle, Ricky Ponting, David Hussey, Brendon McCullum and Shoaib Akhtar would be my picks but one of them will have to sit out," he said.
