Scots Keen To Pull Off Upset

McCallum - raring to go.

Scotland are hoping to make their mark on the cricket world by upsetting the odds and beating England in tomorrow's inaugural one-day international between the old rivals.

Despite competing against each other at football and rugby union for centuries, tomorrow's 50-over match at the Grange will be the first official one-day international between the two sides.

It is a historic occasion in itself, but Scotland want to mark the event by demonstrating their progress as a cricket nation by shocking England's team of superstars.

Warwickshire batsman Nav Poonia said: "For us as a team to get a win against England would be a massive win, a massive stride forward and I think everyone in the world would look at Scotland and see we'd made big progress if that was to happen."

The 22-year-old continued: "It would be a big thing for the team and for me individually, if I was to score some runs tomorrow.

"Two months ago I was thinking that I couldn't wait for this game and August seemed a long way away but in the last month I've had a lot of cricket and all of a sudden it's here."

Poonia is one of a number of players in Scotland's squad with county connections, with Durham's Kyle Coetzer and Warwickshire's Calum MacLeod included in a squad which also features former Yorkshire players Gavin Hamilton and John Blain.

But even with that strength in depth, a Scotland victory is unlikely in front of a near-capacity 6,000 crowd which should stimulate interest in the game north of the border if nothing else.

"This game is huge," admitted middle order batsman Neil McCallum, who plays his club cricket at the Grange.

"I really think it's massive. With such a huge support behind us tomorrow, young and old, as long as we can put in a good performance it's going to do a lot of good for Scottish cricket in the long term.

"There were a few butterflies when the lads were putting the kit on before training today, which is a good feeling. There's a bit of excitement and we're all looking forward to the big day.

"There's a bit of hype surrounding this game and they're up here with their big guns, but it's just another game of cricket - it's always good to play the auld enemy, we're looking forward to the challenge and we're certainly up for it."
